    Things to do

-Beaches. There’s a fine choice of public and private beaches along the Nice waterfront, with services and facilities like showers, sunbed rental, areas for beach sports and refreshments stands. Most of these beaches shelve quite steeply, so are best suited to grown-up swimmers, but you won’t have to travel far along the coast in either direction to find shallow, sandy beaches at, say, Antibes or Villefranche-sur-Mer.

-Shopping. Nice has a reputation for its excellent shopping, and if it’s a designer experience you’re after, then you couldn’t be better located in Carre d’Or. Parallel to Promenade des Anglais is Rue de France, a pedestrianised street packed with boutiques and fashion houses, ideal for discerning shoppers. For something less exclusive, Avenue Jean Médecin is to the east, and has the Nice Etoile shopping centre, with more affordable brands alongside cafes, restaurants and a cinema.

-Museums. The Riviera is know for being a popular destination for generations of artists, a tradition that goes back to Matisse and Chagall, both of whom are the subject of fascinating museums in Nice. The Matisse Museum is especially highly regarded, with a large collection of work encompassing a long period of his life. There’s also the Contemporary Art Museum, displaying work by the likes of Roy Lichtenstein, Yves Klein and Andy Warhol.

-History. The old-town in Nice has all the hallmarks of a medieval Mediterranean centre, with narrow, winding streets and tall, elegant 16th Century houses painted in muted pastel colours. Nice Cathedral marks the centre of the old-town and is a baroque 17th Century building, with a bell tower from the mid-18th Century. Another beautiful sight nearby is the Palais Lascaris from the 1600s, which has a collection of some 500 antique musical instruments.

-Cuisine. A local dish that is known throughout the world is Salade Niçoise, which has tomato, peppers, tuna, baked eggs, olives and anchovies. Due to the exceptional quality of local fruit and vegetables, simple dishes like Ratatouille can be sublime in Nice, while seafood like sea urchins, bream and mullet are on many menus. There are restaurants to match all budgets, but the old-town and Carre d’Or are where the top tier eateries tend to be found.
