Godelleta and the countryside just inland from Valencia

When you first arrive at your holiday destination, first impressions are important. Visitors to the Godelleta countryside are always pleasantly surprised by how green and pretty the landscape is. Godelleta is a typical small, sleepy Spanish agricultural town clinging to hillside very close to the vibrant city of Valencia. Set in rolling countryside, it is surrounded by orange groves, peach trees, vines and pine forest. Life here revolves around the seasons; the orange harvest in winter and early spring, summer festivals and the autumn grape harvest.

Godelleta is a lovely place to relax and get away from it all. Tractors laden with fruit trundle down country lanes and the pace of life is slow and gentle. Yet its proximity to motorway links put Godelleta less than 30 mins away from the historic city of Valencia and the unspoilt beaches of the El Saler and Albufuera national parks.

Just outside Godelleta lies the prestigious El Bosque golf course. This 18 hole course is considered one of the grandest in Spain and has a restaurant open to non-members with spectacular views. But for local cuisine the best and most popular restaurant is the Mirador in Cumbres de Calicanto, 8kms from Godelleta. This friendly, family-run restaurant features a large outdoor terrace, lovely for dinner or tapas on a warm summer night. The 3 course lunch menu is fantastic value for money and is available every day of the week. It also has a take-away service for traditional, Valencian paella, cooked over pine logs and provided in the huge paella pan it has been cooked in. Don't forget to end your meal with a glass of Godelleta's famous, sweet moscatel wine.

Having Valencia City so nearby, with Europe's biggest aquarium, Bio park zoo, historic sites and F1 street circuit is very appealing. But the small town near Godelleta are also interesting, especially for fiestas. A ten minute drive brings you to Cheste and Chiva. Cheste's winding, narrow streets lead you to a magnificent basilica in the centre of the town. Chiva, Cheste and Godelleta all have festivals featuring bull-runs during the month of August. However, these are not dangerous and visitors are welcome to join in. Drive just 17kms from Godelleta and you will reach Bunol. A pretty little town, Bunol has a music and film festival in winter, but it is really famous for its August tomato throwing festival- sticky and smelly but unmissable!

Further inland from Godelleta the scenery becomes mountainous and spectacular. This is Requena, the oldest wine growing region in Spain and a popular resort with Spanish holidaymakers. The walled town of Requena features a ruined castle, knights houses and a restored medieval church. Beneath this ancient town lie caves which can be accessed via the tourist office in the old town square. Enjoy wine tasting in the numerous bodegas or come to the wine festival in August or the sausage festival in February.

For those who enjoy a bit of high speed excitement, the Ricardo Tormo motor racing circuit hosts year round events. The world superbike championships take place here in April and October features the final race in the MotoGP calendar. There are also touring car championships and F1 challengers throughout the year. The circuit lies between Godelleta and Cheste. Further information on all the events can be found on the Ricardo Tormo website.

Godelleta then is an ideal, year-round base for exploring the area just inland from Valencia and the magnificent city and beaches nearby.
