    Things to do

-Beaches. On the coast a short way from Pachino is Marzamemi, which doubles as a fishing village and small tourist resort, with an attractive sandy beach. It’s the beginning of a long series of lovely beaches extending north. A hundred metres offshore here is the Island of Brancati, which provides an interesting view for anyone enjoying a meal at a seafood restaurant on the waterfront.

-History. Pachino has long been picked as a shooting location for domestic Italian films, thanks to its charming appearance. Interesting landmarks in the old town include the Torre Scibini, constructed in the 15th Century as a watchtower against Saracen pirates. 25 kilometres north of Pachino is Noto, a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its fabulous ensemble of baroque architecture.

-Nature. Pachino is on the southern tip of the Vendicari Nature Reserve, which protects a unique and delicate eco-system thanks to the high salt content of its waters. It boasts a landscape of lagoons, beaches, sand dunes and rock forms that provides a stopover for a wide array of migrating bird species, earning it the nickname of “Bird Hotel”. It’s a fabulous spot too for a secluded seafront walk.

-Food and drink. Right next to the sea, fish is a big ingredient in cuisine around Pachino. Just some of the local seafood specialities include fried swordfish with caper and onion sauce; fish and onion soup; or spaghetti with either black squid or lobster and anchovies. Winemaking is also an important industry; Nero d’Avola is a local red that has its roots in Sicily’s ancient history.

-Syracuse. Syracuse is a few kilometres to the north and is a handsome city bursting with ancient, Byzantine and medieval history. The main Roman and Ancient Greek sites can be found in the Neapolis – admission will grant you entry to the Roman amphitheatre, Greek theatre and various ancient caves and quarries. The old town is also a must. Here you should see the Basilica of Santa Lucia, which houses a Caravaggio painting.
