    Cres, pronounced "Tsres" is a lovely island just off the Croatian coast in the Adriatic Sea. Although it is the largest of the Croatian islands, it has an area of 405 km ² and just over 3000 residents. The Vrana Lake is the island's main freshwater supply and the high peak of Gorice is 650m above sea level. Cres has a rich and diverse wildlife including dolphins, the rare white-headed griffon vultures and more than 1100 plant species including endemic rare plants.     The main town on Cres is the town of the same name. Its centre has plenty of shops selling local produce such as olive oil and wine. It is a pedestrainized town best explored on foot as it has many narrow streets. The pretty port has many boats bobbing in the clear waters.


    Follow the road up from the Port of Porozina to the high point on the high hill of Sis before descending to the village of Beli. This is a fortified town which dates back to prehistoric times as early as 4000BC. It has a cluster of houses, a harbour and a pebble beach.


    Opposite Valun on the plateau which runs along the centre of the island, the Romans named this place Hibernitis which means "Winterly" for its stormy winds. It has an unassailable fortress on top of the 378m high cliff sheltered by a protective wall with two doorways. It resembles the deck of a ship rather than a hilltop village.
