Things to do

-Beaches. The Costa Dorada has a reputation for long, golden sandy beaches, many of which have earned Blue Flag status recognising their cleanliness and services. There’s 92 kilometres of coastline, with around 60 different beaches. Some of the best include Miami Platja, Calafell, Cambrils, as well as less frequented choices like Mont-Roig del Camp and Torredembarra.

-Heritage. The Tarragona province has fantastic medieval heritage in the form of Cistercian abbeys, two of which, the UNESCO listed Poblet and Santes Creus, are just in from the coast. If you hold an interest in Catalan modernist architecture then many of the towns on the Costa Dorada are blessed with buildings by Gaudí and his contemporaries – Reus is especially well-endowed in this respect.

-Family attractions. On the Costa Dorada you won’t have to look hard for days out. Port Aventura is a headline attraction – a state-of-the-art theme park with exciting rollercoasters and amusements. There’s also a water park, and three golf courses. Another water park, Aquopolis, can be found at La Pineda, while Aqualeon is a vast nature-themed attraction also boasting a water park alongside a host of animal exhibits.

-Tarragona. This city is loaded with historical interest that goes all the way back to Roman times. In that era it was the most important stronghold on the Iberian Peninsula, and today there are plenty of fragments pointing to its former status. You can visit the theatre, see the circus, ancient walls, forum and even a portion of an aqueduct just outside the city.

-Food and drink. The Costa Dorada is close to five different DO wine regions, making it a great destination for tours. There’s Penedès, known for its whites, and the world famous Priorat, the vineyards of which tend to be found at a slightly higher altitude. Meanwhile all the classic Mediterranean ingredients are cultivated or sourced in this region – olives, fish, honey and a wide variety of fruits and nuts.
