Things to Do on Holiday to Tabanan, Indonesia

Bali Butterfly Park in the town is a small centre but it has several species on show. You can also learn more about butterflies as there is a lot of research being carried out here. It is recommended that you visit the centre in the morning as this is when the butterflies are most active. On the outskirts to the east of the town is the Subak Museum which gives an insight into the production of rice and agriculture in the area. The Gedong Marya Theater is also worth a look, having been built in 1974 in tribute to one of Bali’s most famous dancers, I Ketut Marya.

In the immediate area of Tabanan you will find several black sand beaches dotted here and there along track roads. These are a great opportunity to relax and take in some stunning sea views. These beaches are unfortunately not recommended for swimming or watersports.

Approximately half an hour’s drive to the north-east of Tabanan is the village of Sangeh where you will find the Sangeh Monkey Forest. This forest has been around since at least the 17th century and covers approximately 6 hectares. It is occupied by sacred monkeys who have always lived in the area. As monkeys are associated with holy areas in Bali, a temple was built here, the Pura Bukit Sari. The forest and all of its plants, birds and animals are protected and documented.

Also worth a visit is the small town of Pejaten, approximately 12 kilometres to the south of Tabanan. Pejaten is renowned for its pottery and many of the residents spend their days making washbasins, pots and roof tiles. The pottery is beautifully decorated and it is possible to purchase some items to take home as souvenirs.
