    Things to do

-Winter sports: Between December and April, skiers and snowboarders can choose from four alpine resorts in the area, including Espot Esquí, Baqueira-Beret, Tavascan and Port-Ainé. The largest is Baqueria-Beret with 71 runs and a thoroughly modern infrastructure. Cross-country skiing is a fine way to explore the wilderness, and there’s an ideal setting for this activity at the Forest of Virós.

-Summer activities: After the thaw there’s much to enjoy for those who don’t mind heights or getting wet. The kayaking and rafting is especially good here, as the Noguera Palleresa River is billed as one of Europe’s best for whitewater fun. The potential for adventure on foot or by bike is almost endless, with an abundance of safe and well-marked trails across Pallars Sobirà including an almost endless tally of peaks to conquer.

-Heritage: El Pallars has magnificent but often overlooked Romanesque buildings, most of which are churches and chapels, but there are also monasteries and a couple of bridges here dating back 1,000 years. The interiors of the religious buildings have been painstakingly restored and it’s possible to see exquisite frescoes and wood carvings. Escaló meanwhile is an authentic walled village complete with fortified gates and towers.

-Gastronomy: This high in the Pyrenees, meat plays a big part in local diets, used in satisfying dishes like wild boar stew or mountain paella, which involves pork and rabbit instead of seafood. Freshwater fish like trout are also excellent here, as well as seasonal produce like garden vegetables and mushrooms.

-Excursions: There are lots of quaint mountain towns within a comfortable car journey. Coll de Nargó, La Seu d’Urgell and Vielha are all well worth strolling around. In Bossòst to the west there’s also an animal park with Pyrenean species like wolves, mountain goats and brown bears, kept in humane enclosures in semi-liberty. You can also leave the country, visiting Andorra or the picturesque French spa town of Bagnères-du-Luchon.
