Le Mans itself has one of the most beautiful old quarters in France, with a remarkable Cathedral and a wealth of royal history. The city's love of cars began in 1873 when local bell-maker, Amadée Bollée, built his first steam-driven car. The Renault factory continues this business today in southwest Le Mans.     Abbaye de l'Epau

    Sightseeing at a much more leisurely pace can be enjoyed at the Cistercian Abbey. It was founded in 1229 by Queen Berengaria. Tours include seeing the Abbey dormitory with the remains of a 14th century fresco, a writing room and the church itself.
