Make a holiday apartment in Bilbao City your home away from home

Rentals here incorporate stylish design and seamless convenience, with useful modern comforts like wi-fi. Listed on HomeAway are Bilbao City holiday rentals in the best locations, commanding views of the iconic Guggenheim Museum, or minutes on foot from great restaurants and other top cultural attractions. If you have any preferences for guest facilities and comforts at your ideal holiday home in Bilbao City, you need only define them in your search.

    Things to do

-Sights. A modern symbol for Bilbao is Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim Museum, constructed in 1997. It’s an innovative, asymmetrical and titanium-clad structure that famously houses large-scale art installations alongside modern art from the Basque Country and the rest of the world. For contrast you could head to the Casco Viejo, packed with historical buildings like the Cathedral of St. James, from the 1300s.

-City lifestyle. You could explore a first-rate art museum - the Museum of Fine Arts. It holds more than 6,000 works spanning 900 years, by artists as diverse as Francis Bacon, Paul Gauguin and El Greco. Afterwards, you might head for Casco Viejo to browse authentic family-run stores, or the commercial districts at Gran Vía, Indautxu and Ensanche for international high street shopping.

-Gastronomy. The Basque Country has customs distinct from other Spanish regions, and this is clear in its cuisine. Bilbao has its own form of tapas, known as Pintxos – small portions of anything from cured ham to fish, served on slices of bread. Nouvelle cuisine is also a passion here, marrying northern Spanish and French techniques and making full use of the exquisite regional produce.

-Coast. Many of the beaches on the coastline are exposed to the power of the Atlantic, which makes them the best in Spain for surfing. Mundaka is 40 kilometres northeast of Bilbao and is a venue for world cup events. In summer, if it’s beach relaxation you need, then Plentzia is 25 kilometres away and has long been a chic summer destination, with natural sandy beaches and lots of greenery.

-Inland. Travel in the other direction and it’s a landscape of tall forest-covered hills, perfect for walks at any time of year. Argalario and La Arboleda offer scenic walks in former mining areas, where historic remnants of Bilbao’s industrial past can still be seen. For something wilder there are three mountain ranges within a short drive, including the Gorbeia Natural Park, with its spectacular 100m waterfall, Cascada de Gujuli.

    Weather in Bilbao City

Bilbao has an Oceanic climate, which is down to its location on the Bay of Biscay. This means there aren’t the baking temperatures that you can get in other parts of Spain, but winters are rarely cold here either. If you get to a Bilbao City apartment in summer then there’s warm, pleasant weather in store, perhaps interspersed with the odd shower. The other seasons are all mild, and prone to rainfall, which occurs in the form of drizzle. An average winter’s day here sees temperatures reach the teens and get close to zero at night.

    Travel to Bilbao City

Bilbao has its own international airport (BIO), which is about 15 kilometres from the Casco Viejo. There are a few connections to airports in the UK, with budget airlines. By car it’s no more than a 15-minute drive from the airport terminal to central Bilbao. If you’re using public transport to get to your Bilbao City holiday home then you catch the A3247 Bizkaibus, which runs at regular intervals. Bilbao also has rail connections via RENFE to Madrid and Barcelona, as well as a ferry link to Portsmouth.
