    Things to do

-Valencia attractions. A major recent addition to Valencia's list of sights is the City of Arts and Sciences, as much a draw for the imaginative design of its buildings as what you'll find inside them. Here there's a planetarium, various museums devoted to art and science, as well as an IMAX cinema. Meanwhile, Valencia's Central Market is also an attraction in its own right - housed in a lovely modernist building, it's a great way to get a taste of city life.

-Beaches. The coastline north of Valencia's port is easiest to reach from L'Eliana. Here you can get to Las Arenas and Malvarrosa, which are both backed by the Paseon Maritimon and are endowed with comprehensive services and facilities. Malvarrosa is almost two kilometres in length and 60 metres wide, and is a venue for a variety of events throughout the year, including an airshow in summer. Las Arenas is a little smaller, but famed for the high quality of its restaurants.

-Cuisine. Paella, one of Spain's best-loved culinary exports, originated in the Valencia area. It's a rice dish, simmered in a large iron pan and generally contains either blend of meat (chicken and rabbit) or fish and seafood. Valencia is in a key area for rice-growing, so it's an important feature of the cuisine, also featuring in arros negre, which is usually langoustine simmered in rice dyed black with squid ink. During the famous Fallas celebration, doughnut-like Bunyols are the sweet of choice.

-Fallas. Taking place every March, it's worth timing your visit to the city to catch this celebration, which involves huge papier mache models, often satirical in character, many parades and lots of noisy fireworks. Three events involving fireworks take place daily throughout the week-long celebration. The most significant is Mascleta, in which 120 kilogrammes of gunpowder is detonated in Plaza del Ayuntamiento.

-Historic buildings. To see some of Valencia's most impressive historic architecture you should make for the Barri del Carme, at the heart of the old centre. Buildings here have parts that go all the way back to Roman and Moorish times. A UNESCO-listed structure is the Silk Exchange, a celebrated piece of Valencian-gothic architecture dating to the late-15th Century. Be sure to make time for the Cathedral, medieval hospital, and the many churches dating to the middle ages.
