Bag your perfect Tavira holiday rental

Tavira is right up there with the chart-topping resort towns that pepper the more popular western reaches of the Algarve. With roots in the Moorish era, its centre, beautifully strung out along the drifting Rio Gilao, comes laden with arabesque architecture and weathered cobbled lanes. Azulejos-fronted mansions also crowd the plazas, while romantic pousadas and little Portuguese cafes spill onto the river's edge. Tavira holiday lettings are the perfect base from which to explore all that, before breaking away from the age-old city to laze on the glowing, daffodil-hued sands of Tavira Island or sail between the salt pans of the wild Ria Formosa.

History

The rich history of Tavira

Tavira started life way back when the Phoenician Greeks sailed across the Mediterranean to seed their colonies at the end of the Iberian Peninsula. That occurred sometime around 1,000 BC, before the Romans arrived and created the trading port of Balsa, on the coast, close to where the town sits today. However, modern Tavira was begun with the Moors, closer to 700 AD. They built the Castle of Tavira, which can still be seen – half-crumbling and overgrown – between the cobbled lanes and whitewashed buildings on the west banks of the Rio Gilao. The Christian reconquest of Iberia brought bloody battles to the town in the 13th century, while a great earthquake in 1755 helped to decimate the salt production industries that once dominated the shores, nearby.
