    Things to do

-Culture. El Raval has a reputation for literature and the arts - in this neighbourhood are the Museum of Contemporary Art and Centre for Contemporary Culture. You could continue your journey through Barcelona’s arts scene by visiting the nearby Parc de Joan Miró to see one of this artist’s most important sculptures, the 21 metre-high Woman and Bird. There’s also a fantastic museum in Sants-Montjuïc dedicated to his work.

-Architecture. Barcelona has a UNESCO World Heritage Site protecting its numerous works of Catalan Modernist architecture, an offshoot of art nouveau that straddled the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. The luminary was Antoni Gaudí, who designed La Pedrera and Casa Batlló in l’Eixample, as well as the sublime Sagrada Família church, an awe-inspiring landmark so elaborate that it won’t be completed until 2026, a century after it was started.

-Local sights. No visit to Barcelona would be complete with out a walk along Las Ramblas, which passes by El Raval. It’s a bustling, tree-lined walkway, home to flower-sellers, living statues and a famous mosaic by Joan Miró by day. On the way you could stop by at La Boqueria market or watch the world go by from a street-side cafe.

-Food and drink. El Raval is a young, stylish area, home to trendy cafes, bars and noodle houses. Tapas bars also abound, especially if you head up to Plaça Catalunya. On Passeig de Gràcia the scene is a bit more upscale, with lots of elegant cafes and eateries lining the street. There are a number of places to enjoy fresh seafood across Barcelona, but very close, in Poble-Sec is Rias de Galicia, serving fish in the Galician style.

-Shopping. El Raval is probably the best place to be if you’ve come to Barcelona to indulge in rental therapy. In the immediate vicinity are alternative boutiques and independent book-shops. Across La Rambla are a mixture of small, affordable fashion stores and all the international high-street brands. You could make for Passeig de Gràcia for luxury boutiques, or down to Barceloneta for Maremagnum, one of Barcelona’s best malls.
