The Western Cape of South Africa is a stunning region, home to the iconic Table Mountain, the beautiful beaches of the peninsular, dramatic mountains of the Cederberg Mountains and wild flower plains of the north-western cape.

Cape Town is the most famous city on the Western Cape, with a reputation as the most laid-back city in South Africa which is attributed to the city lying in the shadow of Table Mountain, one of the most spiritual places on earth.

The Garden Route is an extremely scenic stretch of the coast running from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth, with long white sandy beaches, hidden coves, freshwater lakes, indigenous yellowwood forest and small idyllic towns. The Garden Route is a hugely popular destination due to its unspoilt natural heritage including the Wilderness Coast, Knysna’s Lagoon, Tsitsikamma National Park and Plettenberg Bay.

The Winelands, so called due to the stunning back-drop of lush vineyards and Cape homesteads in historical centres. This area is steeped in history, and after a day investigating the fascinating heritage of the area, relax with a glass of the fine locally produced wines. A holiday villa in the Winelands is also a magnificent place to discover Cape Town from, as it is just 45minutes away.

On the southernmost tip of Africa is the Overberg. It offers secluded coves and beaches stretching far into the horizon. This is where the two oceans dramatically meet, and the 120 shipwrecks around this part of the country tell of the savageness the sea can create. Overberg is right in the middle of the Whale Coast, and on land the reptiles, birds and mammals bring in curious visitors from all over the globe. The perfectly preserved mission stations at Elim and Genadendal are just two examples of the multitude of historical monuments which are a source of huge pride in South Africa, and are certainly worth a visit.

Things to do on the Western Cape, South Africa

The Western Cape has unrivalled whale watching opportunities between June and November, with Hermanus as the ‘Whale Capital’. Taking a holiday rental in this part of the Western Cape also gives you access to arguably some of the best fishing in Africa too, as well as 12 km of unspoilt beaches of Grotto and Voelkip.

On the nature front, the Western Cape has some fantastic wildlife parks where you can either take a safari or hike in the wilderness in private game reserves; although it is essential you take a local guide with you as the African animals can be very dangerous if approached badly.

The coastal regions of the Western Cape are havens for water sports, surfing, Sailing, windsurfing, body boarding and scuba diving.

For the less adventurous, the Western Cape is a superb place to take a golfing holiday, with the world-famous Stellenbosch Golf Course close to many of the rental villas on the Western Cape.
