    Niagara-on-the-Lake was first settled in 1792 making it one of Canada’s oldest settlements and was incorporated as a town in 1792. In 1798 the town was named Niagara and in 1880 this became Niagara-on-the-Lake so as to distinguish it from the nearby town of Niagara Falls.
