Make a holiday villa in Cargese your home away from home

HomeAway's holiday rentals in Cargese lie in a perfect storm of coastal hideaways, mountain vistas, and cultural value. It's no secret that strife creates a compelling story, and Cargese's history is no different. The former Greek colony clashed with the native Corsicans in the 18th century, and nowhere is this more represented than by the opposing churches glowering across the valley at each other, one built by the Greeks, one by the Corsicans. Throw in the Genoese overlords and the confusing triple powerplay is complete (though nowadays, the churches actually share a priest!).

Cargese apartments and villas are located in the village sitting 100 metres above the sea, commanding impressive views. Historically a fishing village, half a dozen boats still ply the surrounding sea, while the rest of the village infrastructure is given over to the marina and related tourism. Cargese villas are a great option for beach breaks, with five nearby to choose from. Most holiday accommodation in Cargese comes with a fully equipped kitchen and laundry facilities, and an outdoor BBQ area for al fresco dining. Nearly all properties are near the sea.

    Things to do

Beaches: There are five beaches within easy reach of Cargese apartments. There's a Club Mediterranean holiday resort at Chiuni beach, four or so miles north of the village. The closest to the village are Peru and Capizollu beaches. Stagnoli beach, around four miles to the south, has a watersports centre.

Evening entertainment: Cargese isn't really the place to go for a rollicking night out. Evening entertainment centres around quiet restaurants and cafés with excellent local food. Cargese is ideal for the moonlight walks and relaxing sunsets, though Ajaccio is reachable by bus and taxi for those seeking a more lively time. HomeAway also offers accommodation in Ajaccio itself.

Outdoor pursuits: Cargese is a small village with a large marina, and is flanked by two beaches with watersports aplenty, with Club Med at Chiuni beach and a UCPA facility at Stagnoli. Inland, of course, there are Corsica's ubiquitous mountains for hiking, biking, trekking and in the winter, even skiing.

Shopping: Cargese is not the place to come for shopping, though Ajaccio – a short bus ride down the coast – has a more eclectic collection of shops to cater to the larger tourist population there. Pretty much every village has its own market for food and sundry shopping, however.

Culture: One of the historical features of Corsica are the Genoese warning towers dotted around the island's circumference, erected to warn against attack, chiefly from pirates during the 16th century. Of the 85 known, 67 still stand today, some in ruin. Cargese has three, though visitors can of course find these all over the island, using holiday homes in Corsica as a base for historical exploration.
