    Things to do

-Local history. Noto is mere minutes from Avola, and is held as one of the most beautiful towns on the island. It’s filled with splendid baroque architecture from the 1700s, earning UNESCO status, as well as the popular billing, “Garden of Stone”. There’s a host of ornate churches, a cathedral and a small collection of municipal buildings, all in the baroque style.

-Beaches. Avola sits next to a gorgeous stretch of coastline, with long sandy beaches bookended by interesting rock formations and craggy coves. The Avola waterfront has a fine sandy beach, and there are many more to discover a short drive away. Just up from the town is Capo Negro, with a natural arch, and beyond that is the sweeping, shallow bay at Gelsomineto.

-Cuisine. The local food is exquisite and has strong links with the sea. Lobster, anchovies, swordfish and tuna are among the main ingredients of both starters and main courses, while a regional speciality is a fish and onion soup cooked in the Syracuse style, involving squid, clams and mussels in a garlic, wine and tomato broth. Almonds are also produced in the farmland around Avola, and are mainly used as a filling in various pastries.

-Syracuse. Syracuse is an exciting city, where ancient architecture is part of everyday life. It was vital to the ancient Greeks, and is another UNESCO site. Hellenistic buildings to visit include the Temple of Apollo and the impressive Theatre, which has 67 rows. Syracuse’s old town is also lovely, and sits on Ortygia Island, connected to the mainland by bridges.

-Nature. Head inland and you’ll come to Sicily’s answer to the Grand Canyon. In the valley of the river Cassibile there’s a gorge that reaches depths of 250 metres within the Natural Reserve of the Cava Grande del Cassibile. It’s surrounded by fragrant pine forest and is a great place for a swim or for sunbathing on the warm rocks around the water basin.
