    Things to do

-Beach. Pineda’s own beach is broad, three kilometres long and has fine, golden sand. Typically for Catalonia, the beach has food stands, and right on the town’s waterfront there’s a good choice of restaurants. These services, together with the beach’s cleanliness, have earned the beach a Blue Flag. You won’t have to travel far to find more Blue Flag beaches – Canet, Malgrat and Calella are next door and have all been commended.

-Walks. If you want some exercise then Pineda has some picturesque walks, whether you want to stay by the sea or set off on a small mountain adventure. In the hills behind the resort is the Gràcia Hermitage, which can be accessed via a circular trail, and looks out over Santa Susana and Pineda. The coast is less taxing, and you can take a two-hour stroll to Calella and back, passing an old lighthouse on the way.

-Local landmarks. Around Pineda there are clues of ancient civilisation, such as the Roman Aqueduct, four arches of which are still intact. Slightly more recent are the ruins of Montpalau Castle, which lie in the foothills behind Pineda and dates to the 10th Century. The best conserved piece of military architecture around the resort is the Torre de Sant Jaume, built in the 1200s to repel attacks by Turkish corsairs and Barbary pirates.

-Caldes de Malavella. The resort of Caldes is just 30 kilometres north of Pineda, and has a spa culture that dates back more than 2,000 years. Here you can discover the Roman bath complex, which features a large pool surrounded by chambers for ancient treatments. Caldes also has PGA Catalunya, one of Spain’s most prestigious golf courses, and there are two contemporary spas if you’d like to be cosseted for a day.

-Barcelona. This city is close enough for a day trip, and has the sights, culture, shopping, cuisine and nightlife to match any city in Europe. Essential are the UNESCO-listed examples of modernist architecture by Antoni Gaudí and Josep Puig i Cadafalch, as well as a walk along Las Ramblas, where flower-sellers and street performers line the way.

    Weather in Pineda de Mar

Coastal regions in Catalonia get a mild Mediterranean climate and relatively high humidity. If you’re planning your holiday at self-catering accommodation in Pineda de Mar for between May and October, then light, loose clothing is always the best way to go. In July and August it can get up to the low-30s, and temperatures are consistent – even the cooler days are warm if you’ve just arrived from Northern Europe. Winters are much cooler, but pleasant, with daily highs hitting the teens in December.

    Travel to Pineda de Mar

Pineda de Mar is 40 minutes from Girona Airport (GRO) to the north and around an hour from Barcelona-El Prat (BCN) to the southwest. Of the two, Barcelona has more flights from the UK, being Spain’s second airport. But Girona is also well connected especially if you’re travelling to a Pineda de Mar holiday home in the summer. Both airports are close to the AP-7 autopista, which passes by Pineda, so it won’t be hard to get to the resort by car. Bus services run from both airports to either Pineda or the nearby town of Blanes.
