    Things to do

-Central Granada: This city has one of Spain’s best ensembles of historic buildings, all with a noticeable Moorish flavour. The Alcaiceria is the city’s former Moorish silk market, restored in the 19th century according to the original design. Granada’s magnificent Gothic and Baroque cathedral is from the 1500s, and is the second-largest in the country.

-Alhambra: This wonderful palace and fortress complex is essential for anyone visiting Granada. It dates to Granada’s Moorish era, and was begun in the 9th century. Over the next 400 years it was gradually expanded. There’s much to see here, from the intricate Generalife gardens to the plush Palacios Nazaries and the ruins of the commanding Acazaba fortress, which has the best panoramas of the complex.

-Outdoor recreation: In winter, the Sierra Nevada – some 45 minutes away – has a ski season that lasts for several months. It’s the southernmost ski resort in Europe, but its maximum elevation of more than 3,000 metres means there’s always generous snowfall. Golfers don’t need to travel so far; Santa Clara is an 18-hole course a few minutes away, with fantastic views, and Granada Club de Golf is another fine option a couple of kilometres outside Alhendin.

-Food and drink: Eating out in Granada is always a joy, as the tapas is of a very high standard and is often served complimentarily with drinks. Traditional local cuisine centres on hearty dishes like Migas, which is breadcrumbs fried with olive oil, garlic and mostly served with pork products.

-Coast: Follow the A-44 down to the Mediterranean, where there’s a 20-kilometre series of magnificent beaches between Salobreña and Castell de Ferro. The beaches here are mostly natural in character and often feature archaeological fragments dating back to Moorish times. Torrenueva has two kilometres of coarse sand, bathed by calm, blue waters. Calahonda is a gorgeous Blue Flag beach forming a gentle curve and backed by cliffs and low-key developments.

    Weather in Alhendin

The climate around Alhendin holiday homes is Mediterranean, but with continental influence. The presence of the Sierra Nevada to the east also means that there’s snowfall close by in winter. By May it’s starting to get warm and daily averages continue to rise through to August when they peak at 34°C. July and August bring almost no rain, but the other months of the year each get around six days of precipitation.
