This former Soviet state is full of surprises and offers numerous things for holidaymakers to see and do. Things to do on holiday to Lithuania

Lithuania has some delightful sandy beaches at places such as Palanga and Neringa, which are great for taking a walk along or enjoying a refreshing swim in the Baltic Sea. Lithuania boasts many museums and galleries including the Lithuanian Sea Museum in Klaipeda and the Military Museum of Vytautas the Great in Kaunas. The city of Kaunas is also home to some buildings of religious significance such as Christ’s Resurrection Basilica and a 17th century monastery. Visitors will find a 13th century castle and the Presidential Palace of Lithuania in Kaunas. In the capital city, Vilnius there is another Presidential Palace and the impressive Gediminas Hill. The capital also houses various memorials and statues such as the Angel of Uzupis Statue and curiously a Frank Zappa Memorial.

The warmest time of the year is usually between June and August when the average high temperature is 21-22 degrees centigrade. The coldest month of the year is January when the average minimum temperature is -9 degrees centigrade and the maximum -4 degrees. Rainfall is spread throughout the year but more rain falls on the coast. The wettest season tends to be the summer with an average of 79mm of rainfall occurring in July.

Travel to Lithuania

The largest airport in Lithuania is Vilnius International (VNO), which is approximately six kilometres from the capital city. Flights arrive here from various cities including Amsterdam (AMS), Copenhagen (CPH), Dublin (DUB), Frankfurt (FRA), Kiev-Borispol (KBP), Paris-Charles de Gaulle (CDG), Rome-Fiumicino (FCO) and Stockholm-Arlanda (ARN) amongst others. Alternatively Ryanair operate flights in and out of Kaunas International Airport (KUN), which is 15 kilometres from Kaunas city centre. Destinations served include Berlin-Schonefeld (SXF), Brussels-Charleroi (CRL), Dublin (DUB), Edinburgh (EDI), Gothenburg-City (GSE), Liverpool (LPL) and London-Gatwick (LGW) amongst others. There are car rental services and taxis at both airports.
