Things to do

House of Europa:

The House of Europa is comprised of two mosaics that tell the story of Europa's abduction by Zeus. Zeus had disguised himself as a bull in order to carry the Lady Europa to Crete. The mosaics are on display in the Western Archaeological Zone on Kos.

Plane Tree of Hippocrates:

The founder of medicine, Hippocrates (after whom the Hippocratic oath is named) is said to have been born on and lived on the island of Kos. Visit several sights associated with him, such as the Plane Tree of Hippocrates, where Hippocrates taught his students. This tree has proved invaluable for modern medicine.

The Odeon Amphitheatre:

The Odeon Theatre was built in the 2nd and 3rd centuries by Romans. The ruins were found in good condition in the early 20th century. The entire site of ruins is relatively compact, making it possible to see the theatre, the baths, and the gymnasium on a short walk.

Nerantzia Castle:

Visit Nerantzia Castle, in the city of Kos. The castle was built by the Hospitaller Knights in the 14th century, and was then subsequently expanded through the early modern period. The castle sits on an archaeological site and is surrounded by ancient ruins.

Ruins at Asclepeion:

Visit the ruins at Asclepeion, the most significant archaeological site on Kos. The site is a temple devoted to the god Asclepius. Excavations began in 1902 by German archaeologist Rudolf Herzog. The site includes multiple terraces with different ruins on each including rooms where ancient medicine was practiced, and a marble temple in the Doric style.

Embros Thermi:

The Embros Thermi, located on the southeastern coast of the island, are natural hot springs on the island of Kos. The sulphurous waters reach 49°C and flow into a large pool sufficiently deep for swimming, just adjacent to the ocean. This location is popular with bathers for its curative properties.

Weather in Kos

Grecian weather is generally fairly mild, making for ideal holiday conditions all year round. Summer temperatures reach a dry 30°C with plenty of sunshine; winters are rainy, but the temperature does not slip below 10°C. A high-wind system called the Meltemi is prevalent in late summer on the southern islands, but this concerns sailors almost exclusively and provides tourists with welcome respite from the heat.
