Make a holiday villa in La Janda your home away from home

La Janda villas will provide you with a comfortable patch of rural Andalucia, just in from the Costa de la Luz. Most holiday homes in La Janda are fitted with private pools and in your spacious garden you'll be able admire the scenery over a barbecue on a balmy summer evening. Holiday villas in La Janda are upmarket modern constructions, large enough to cater to extended families and groups of friends. There's plenty to enjoy in the area - gorgeous sandy beaches, ancient Roman towns and a host of first-rate golf courses.

    Things to do

-Local history. Medina Sidonia is a hill-top town with an interesting history that goes back to Roman times. Today it has medieval ramparts that include Moorish gates and cobblestone streets lined with handsome whitewashed houses. On Calle Espiritu Santo you'll even be able to see evidence of the town's original Roman sewers, while sights like the baroque Town Hall and the gothic Santa Maria la Coronado church reward closer inspection.

-Beaches. South of La Janda is Barbate, home to some of the most appealing beaches on the Costa de la Luz. A top beach for swimmers is Zahora, which can be accessed via a footpath. It's sheltered from the wind, so the waters are calm, and there are superb facilities in the summer. More exposed is Canos de Meca, which has fabulous scenery, including 100-metre-tall cliffs, and is great for watersports like windsurfing.

-Golf. There are no fewer than ten golf courses within an hour radius of La Janda. Particularly close is Benalup Golf, which is part of a five-star resort, but is open to the public. The 18-hole course here has fantastic views, with the Alcornacarles Natural Park towering in the background. Dehesa de Montenmedio is a little way south, and is distinctive for its complete lack of development; no villas or holiday communities, just tranquil nature all around.

-Cadiz. This city is claimed to be the oldest not just in Spain, but in western Europe. It was established by the Phoenicians 3000 years ago, and you can see artefacts from this time at the city's Archaeological Museum on Plaza de Mina. There's also a Roman theatre, which was only discovered in 1980, and would have been able to seat 20,000 spectators in its heyday. The city's cathedral is an interesting mix of baroque and rococo styles.

-Cuisine. The nearby city of Jerez is famously associated with the designation of origin brandy produced here. Some of the distillation techniques used today date back to Moorish times. Set close to the coast, there's exquisite shellfish available in La Janda, especially prawns and lobsters. Fish like bream and bass are also popular baked, grilled or fried in this part of Spain.
