    Things to do

-Local heritage. As the former capital of the island, Ciutadella packs a lot of history, and it’s all perfectly preserved here along cobbled streets. The cathedral dates to the 1300s and stands on the site of a mosque. The minaret is still intact as it was converted into the cathedral’s bell-tower. For a glimpse of the old city’s defences, head for the Bastio de sa Font, which now houses the Municipal Museum.

-Beaches. Despite its compact size, Menorca still claims more than 70 beaches, substantially more than Majorca and Ibiza. Nine fantastic examples are easily reached from Ciutadella. Cala Blanca is about five kilometres from the town, slopes gently and is backed by dunes and pine forest. Cala’n Bosch is another fine sandy beach, and faces south, affording it refreshing sea breezes. Also well worth visiting are the coves at Mitjana and Galdana.

-Cuisine. The gastronomy of Menorca is distinct, even from the other Balearic islands. It’s no surprise that fish and seafood feature prominently on menus here – lobster casserole is a dish normally reserved for special occasions, while baked cuttlefish and rice dishes involving fish are always popular. Menorca does great cheese too – Mahon is a medium-soft white cow’s cheese aged for about two and a half years.

-Water-based fun As the coastline around Ciutadella is so indented, making a lot of interesting places difficult to reach by foot or car, it’s well worth renting a kayak for a day and seeing what you can discover. There are remote coves and beautiful caves all close by. For underwater exploration there’s a diving centre in Ciutadella catering to anyone from newcomers to seasoned divers.

-Excursions. With a car it’s no trouble to visit all corners of this small island. If you’re interested in birdlife then you could head for the eastern coast, home to wetland reserves S’Albufera des Grau. Closer, Ferreries is at the heart of the island and is very picturesque. One of the big sights around this village are the ruins of the castle of Santa Agueda, originally a Moorish structure.
