Charlotte Amalie is also home to the second oldest synagogue in the whole of the Western Hemisphere.

One sight that is not to be missed whilst out and about in the city is Blackbeard’s Castle. The watchtower is one of the five National Historic Landmarks of the U.S Virgin Islands and was built by the Danish in 1679. There are stories that the name Blackbeard’s Castle arose as it was rumoured that the infamous pirate himself used the watchtower to scour the seas for passing ships.

The St. Thomas Synagogue is not only the second oldest in the Western World, it has a lot of unusual features. The bimah and benches are made from mahogany wood for example. Probably the most intriguing feature of the synagogue is the floor which is covered in a heavy layer of sand. It is not known the exact reason for this and there are several theories. The synagogue has a small museum attached to it which has a lot of historical Jewish artefacts from previous years.
