It is a beautiful place, with dramatic mountains and beautiful plateaus inundated with volcanic craters, cool streams and picturesque waterfalls. Places to holiday in Mauritius

Grand Bay is the most tourist orientated area of Mauritius, based on the North Coast. The north coast of Mauritius offers many excellent facilities, mainly focused on the exceptional beaches, many bars, restaurants and clubs, as well as some of the best luxury villas in Mauritius. This northern region is mostly flat, with beautiful calm lagoons, great reef diving and some good surfing beaches.

The East Coast of Mauritius offers the nicest beaches, the flagship being Belle Mare. The East coast is a great place to take a rental car and fully explore the entire island. Here, hiking, quad biking and mountain biking are phenomenal, and there are also a range of golf courses.

Things to do from your apartment or villa in Mauritius

The beautiful white coral beaches of Mauritius are world famous, and there is no reason to do anything else but sit and relax with the fine sand between your toes on a Mauritius holiday. The best beaches are Grand Bay, Belle Mare and Pereybere for bathing. However, the beaches also provide a number of magnificent sporting opportunities whilst you stay in a villa rental. Mauritius offers some of the best scuba diving on coral reefs. Although the SCUBA diving in Mauritius is best between December and March, some incredible sights can be seen at any time of year. From June until August, surfing becomes a particular highlight of beach life in Mauritius, especially from Le Morne and Tamarin beaches. Deep sea game fishing is bought to frenzy from October until April, when predators push the larger fish towards shore. Marlin, shark, tuna, barracuda and bonitos can be caught, and Mauritius holds a number of fishing records. Sailing, windsurfing, jet-skiing, waterskiing and a vast range of other activities are available on many beaches, especially Grand Bay and Blue Bay.

Inland, the Black River Gorges National Park protects the natural forests of Mauritius. Walking amongst unbelievable plants and rare bird species is a genuine treat from a Mauritius holiday villa. Another exceptional place to walk is the Ganga Talao, a lake formed in a volcanic crater in the centre of the island. Exploring the natural landscapes of forest, mountains and waterways can be enjoyed on foot, bike or canoe, and there are a range of options from tour operators on the island.

There is nowhere nicer to enjoy a round of golf either. There are three 18 hole golf course, mainly attached to large hotels in Mauritius, but the courses are open to anyone, including those staying in a Mauritius villa rental. Club, ball and caddy hire are available, and the sublime Le Touessrok Golf Course is a course everyone should play on at least once in their lifetime!

The central market in Port-Louis is the islands meeting point, and a magnificent place to stock up on local delicacies, meat and spices when taking a self catering property in Mauritius. Port-Louis is also famous for horse racing.

Weather in Mauritius

Mauritius has a beautiful sub-tropical climate, with summer average temperatures of 30°C. Do not arrive on your Mauritius holiday expecting scorching heat in July and August though. Although temperatures average a delightful 24°C, this is winter in Mauritius. Summer lasts from November until April, and September to November are popular times to visit with average temperatures of 26°C.
