Things to do

Ruins of Palaeopolis:

The Ruins of Palaeopolis are located on the west side of the island of Andros. These ruins have yielded some of the most groundbreaking findings from the Mycenaean and Geometric periods. Walking through the ruins, one can see the ancient city of Paleopolis in its entirety; the city clearly had a marketplace, theatre, altars, and temples.

Goulandris Museum of Contemporary Art:

The Goulandris Museum of Contemporary Art was opened in 1979. The Museum houses a collection owned by Vasilis and Eliza Goulandris comprised of more than 300 works by both Greek and foreign artists. The old wing showcases an exhibit with works by Zogolopoulos, Chryssa, and others.

Archaeological Museum of Andros:

The Archaeological Museum of Andros was founded in 1981 and made possible by a grant from the Basil and Eliza Goulandris Foundation. The Museum houses collections from the Mycenaean era to the Roman era. Objects from the settlement at Zagora can be seen, as can pieces from the Proto-Byzantine period.

Sariza Spring at Apoikia:

Located northwest of the capital town of Andros, the Sariza Spring just outside of Apoikia is a sight worth seeing. The water at this point emerges from a lion's head. The ancient city of Palaeopolis is situated on the side of a steep hill, and the breakwater can be seen underwater at this point as well.

Cyclades Olive Museum:

Visit the Cyclades Olive Museum in Pitrofos. See the way in which olives were pressed in the late 1800s. The building dates back to the mid-1800s and also has beautiful stonework on the facade and inside. See the press room and the multi-storied factory that was typical of family oil mills at that time.

Achla Beach:

Visit Achla Beach, just north of Katafigio Agrias Park. The road to the beach is best travelled by car, or one can take the boat around the island from the town of Andros. This boat is not in operation when the Etesian winds blow.

Weather on Andros

A Mediterranean climate dominates the Greek islands. Summers are hot and dry, with temperatures reaching the mid-30s in July and August. In colder months the temperature sinks to around 10°C. Winds called the Etesians (or Meltemi in Turkish) blow every year from mid-May to mid-September. These winds are most active in the late afternoon and die down in the evening. Sailors are mostly concerned with the Etesians, as they can pick up without warning.
