Things to do

Archaeological Museum of Rethymno:

Visit the Archaeological Museum of Rethymno, operated by the National Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities Conservancy. This museum is organized by excavation site, in chronological order, ranging from the Neolithic to the Roman period. The museum is situated in the Fortezza, within the pentagon-shaped building near the main entrance.

Historical and Folklore Museum of Rethymno:

The Historical and Folklore Museum of Rethymno includes handcrafted works like rugs, hand-sewn lace, and jewellery. The pieces reflect a way of life that predates technology. The museum is located west of Arkadiou and south of Konnou Paleogou.

Museum of Sea Life at Rethymno:

The Museum of Sea Life shows one of Greece's most important collections of fish, molluscs, and sponges native to the area. The museum is located on Arabatzoglou Street in the old part of town. The building is a former abbey.

Fortezza of Rethymno:

The Fortezza of Rethymno is one of the most well-preserved castles in Crete and houses a well-known Wine Festival every July. This impressive fortress is located on one of the headlands above the city, where it was incredibly useful as a military presence. Once inside, the Ibrahim Han Mosque is an absolute must-see.

Nerandzes Mosque:

The Nerandzes Mosque forms an impressive silhouette that has long been a part of the Rethymno skyline. The 17th-century building boasts a fantastic view of the entire city from the turret. Be sure to visit the minaret at the top of the mosque.

Rimondi Fountain:

Believed to have been built in 1588, the current Rimondi fountain is actually a replacement of the original. This fountain, among many others, has provided potable drinking water to residents during water shortages since the 17th century. The fountain's decorative pieces also double as practical parts of the fountain.
