Visiting an apartment in La Vall de Boí you can balance high-elevation adrenaline with high culture, as there’s a medieval UNESCO site along the valley. Accommodation is restful and spacious, with the kind of kitchen and bathroom gadgetry that enables a hassle-free stay. And of course, the views from holiday rentals in La Vall de Boí are incredible, with the Aigüestortes National Park representing the Pyrenees at their most wild.

    Things to do

-Ski. As mentioned, the local Boí Taüll ski resort is the highest skiable part of the Pyrenees, with a maximum elevation of more than 2,750 metre. What this means is exceptional snow quality, untamed nature and a real absence of crowds. There are 44 kilometres of runs, about half of which have full snowmaking facilities. Freestylers can also make full use of a snowpark at the resort.

-Après-ski. After an invigorating day on the slopes the resort has something to offer all members of the clan. There’s a “Kid’s Club”, where the youngest can mess around and have supervised fun, while parents indulge in spa treatments, book massages or simply enjoy a quiet meal at one of a choice of restaurants located around the resort.

-Culture. Historically-speaking, La Vall de Boí is also unique. Set here is a high concentration of medieval Romanesque churches, all nestled in dramatic natural scenery. Numbering nine in total, they have UNESCO World Heritage status and date to the 1100s. A good one to start with is Sant Climent de Taüll, which is the largest and most remarkable thanks to its impressive six-storey bell tower.

-Aigüestortes. La Vall de Boí is on the southern edge of this, Catalonia’s only national park. It’s important for its flora, with a good variety of alpine vegetation, and for its animal life, which includes deer, marmots, chamois, and various bird species. If you’re feeling up to it, the park is a rewarding hiking location in summer, with around 200 lakes and peaks that reach 3,000 metres. Sant Maurici Lake is a handsome destination, viewed from a spectacular lookout.

-Summer adventure. Climbers can make for the Cavallers dam for superb granite rock climbing, with routes spanning 10 or 1,000 metres. The rock-face is well maintained, with lots of installations. Professional assistance and equipment hire is also offered locally for activities as diverse as canyoning, horseback riding, mountain-biking and even paragliding.

Weather in La Vall de Boí
