Skarkos Hill:

The prehistoric settlement of Skarkos is a must-see. The KA Inland Revenue for the Antiquities of the Cyclades unearthed it, after which the site was awarded a European Union Cultural Heritage Prize. The ruins show advanced architecture, multi-storied buildings, and even an old sewage system.

Homer's Tomb:

Homer's Tomb is located on the northern end of the island, near Plakotos Beach. Sources that point to Homer's death on Ios. The tomb is a very popular attraction on the island. The tomb sits atop a hill, with a plaque that reads 'Here the earth covers the sacred head of men and heroes Homer the divine poet'.

Archaeological Museum:

The Archaeological Museum of Ios is located in the capital town, which bears the same name as the island itself. Items from the Skarkos site are available for viewing, as well as other pieces found throughout the excavations conducted on the island. The museum was started by then-mayor Fragkoulis Kortesis in 1904.


This 16th-century castle sits at the top of a hill between Psathi and Saint Theodoti beaches. This fortress was constructed during the Byzantine era while Ios was temporarily occupied. The Panagia Paleokastritissa church holds an annual festival in the castle in honour of the Virgin Mary.

Maganari Beach:

The three large coves of Maganari Beach are full of crystal-clear water perfect for snorkelling, swimming, and diving. Nearby tavernas provide meals and drinks during normal opening hours. The beach is easily reached by bike, car, or boat rental. There is also a nudist section of this beach.


The nearby island of Naxos is definitely worth a day trip at least. Naxos is the largest island in the Cyclades island group. Naxos city has over 6,000 residents. The other villages of Naxos are Filoti, Vivlos, and Koronos, among several others.

Weather on Ios

The weather on Ios is consistent with a Mediterranean climate. Temperatures in the summer peak in the high-30s, while winter brings more precipitation and temperatures in the low-10s. The Etesian Winds arrive in mid-May and remain through mid-October. These strong winds blow across the Aegean and Ionian Seas in the late afternoons, and affect those on the western side of the island, as well as sailors at sea.

Travel to Ios

Travelling to Ios couldn't be easier. From Naxos Airport (JNX) travellers should take a ferry from the main ferry harbour. Blue Star ferries runs both car-carrying and passenger ferries daily. Ferries arrive on Ios at the town of the same name, before travelling along the Epar Od. Iou-Ormou Iou Road, which begins at the harbour and winds through the city. Visitors should follow this road south toward Markos Beach and the natural reserve named Ilias.
