Make a holiday villa in Hernando Beach your home away from home

Despite the name, while Hernando Beach holiday villas are perfectly set for access to the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, sandy beaches are few and far between. What there is at Hernando Beach accommodation, though, is plenty of nature. The place is surrounded by national parks, preserves and wildlife refuges, perfect for some subtropical exploring, whether by land or by water. All Hernando Beach rentals come air-conditioned to alleviate the summer extremes, and are equipped with washer/dryers and satellite/cable TV to relieve the hassle of chores and provide a relaxing end to the day.

    Things to do

-Nature: There are 31,000 acres of saltwater estuaries, marshland and bays at Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge, just a short boat trip away from the accommodation at Hernando Beach. Home to over 250 species of bird, it's fantastic for birdwatchers, and the elusive and endangered West Indian Manatee can be found here. Boats can be chartered and hired from one of the many nearby marinas.

-Watersports: Wildlife watching and fishing are the two main attractions for guests at Hernando Beach holiday rentals, but there are facilities for more robust pursuits, too, such as waterskiing, sailing, or just lounging around on boats in general. Kayaks and canoes are also available for fans of human-powered transport.

-Nightlife: Choice is somewhat thin on the ground when it comes to bars and restaurants in Hernando Beach, but there are enough options to ensure tourists won't go hungry. Hernando Beach is much more about the contemplative peacefulness of nature rather than the rigours of a night out on the town.

-Beaches: There is nothing really in the way of sandy beaches at Hernando Beach, though St. Petersburg's famous sandy coastline is just over an hour's drive to the south. Here, there's every kind of beach guests could possibly want, backed by the convenience and facilities of a major metropolitan area.

-Outdoor activities: Exceptional natural beauty is the hallmark of Crystal River Preserve State Park, which includes undisturbed forests, islands, inlets and quiet backwaters. There are over nine miles of nature trails to explore, and kayaking and canoeing are available for hire so the park can be experienced from the water.

    Weather in Hernando Beach

Florida's subtropical climate is characterised by long, hot and humid summers and mild, short and dry winters, which is why Florida has such a reputation as a year-round destination. The summers are wetter, with the humidity often creating afternoon thunderstorms. America's predilection with air-conditioning, though, means guests will never have to spend long in discomfort, and Florida rarely achieves the high-30s temperatures seen in further inland states. The winters are very much like British summers; dry and maxing out in the low-20s.

    Travel to Hernando Beach

Hernando Beach is most conveniently reached from Tampa International Airport, at only 50 miles to the south, but Orlando is another option at 97 miles to the east. Both airports carry direct flights to the UK and Europe, so no changes will have to be made stateside. Flying in and hiring a car is nearly always the best option when travelling to America, as the inexpensive fuel and typically well-planned roads mean driving around is less of a chore and more of a pleasure. There are no public transport facilities in Hernando Beach, though there is a Greyhound stop on Highway 19 a couple of miles outside the town.
