    Things to do

-Beaches. The Migjorn region has more than its fair share of Blue Flag beaches. At Santanyi there are beautiful compact bays lapped by clear and calm waters. Cala Gran is one of the best, as is Cala Santanyi. Ses Salines meanwhile is known for its long sweeps of golden sand, and Felanitx boasts craggy sheltered coves, flanked by rocky hills clad with pine forest.

-Food and drink. Key to Mediterranean food culture are weekly or biweekly markets – in the town of Felanitx it takes place on Sundays, and in Santanyi you can visit the market on Saturdays and Wednesdays. Visiting the island you could also sample the superb wines that are gaining recognition abroad now. Meanwhile classic Majorcan delicacies include the sweet pastry, esnaimada, and soft cured sausage, sobrassada.

-Local sights. The handsome towns and villages of the Migjorn region are authentic, and feel a world away from the bustle of the resorts. Santanyi goes back to the Middle Ages and has a lovely old square with cafes and small local shops. Further north is Manacor, which has an ensemble of charming old churches and a former royal palace from the 1600s, the keep of which is now a cafe.

-Outdoor activities. The southeastern part of Majorca is known for its fertile farmland, supporting wheat fields, vineyards, almond orchards and olive groves. It’s a lovely location for walks and bike rides, partly because the low terrain is so easy going. You’re also never far from a great golf course on Majorca – nearest is the nine-hole Vall d’Or, but there three are superb clubs to the west at Maioris and Son Antem.

-Palma. Occasionally overlooked by holidaymakers on their way to the big resorts, Majorca’s capital boasts excellent dining, shopping and culture, as well as some fascinating sights. The oldest part of the city, towards the waterfront, is especially charming, with the characteristic narrow paved alleys, Moorish architecture and tall houses with iron-railed balconies. It’s also full of chic boutiques and all the top high-street names are represented here.
