    Things to do

-Heritage: There’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Alta Robagorza protecting the beautiful medieval Romanesque churches of the Vall de Boí. There are nine in total, all dating to the 12th century. Most spectacular is Sant Climent de Taüll, which has a bell-tower six storeys in height. All of the buildings contain historic elements including wood carvings and detailed medieval frescoes.

-Winter sports: The main resort for Alta Ribagorza is Boí Taüll, which has 52 runs totalling 45 kilometres in length. The resort’s services, including shops and restaurants are set in Pla de les Vaques, which has nine lifts serving the slopes. To the east is Port Ainé and to the north is the large Baqueira-Beret. Away from the resorts there are plenty of locations for cross-country skiing across Alta Ribagorza.

-Summer sports: The woodland, steep slopes, scenic lookouts, rivers, waterfalls and lakes create a hiker’s paradise in summer. Alta Ribagorza has more than 20 designated walking trails, ranging from tough hikes over peaks to gentle riverside strolls. Mountain bikers are also well catered for; five major trails weave through this dazzling landscape.

-Cuisine: The mountain cuisine of Alta Ribagorza has been passed down through many generations. In a part of Spain that is covered with snow for several months of the year, the food is rich, warming and filling. A classic dish here is mushroom and rabbit stew. The quality of wild mushrooms here is a source of pride, and a number of local fairs and other events coincide with their annual harvest in October.

-Excursions: France isn’t far from the northernmost point of Alta Ribagorza. The first town across the border is Bagnères-de-Luchon, a quaint spa settlement with beautiful 19th-century mansions. On the Spanish side of the border is Vielha, a handsome resort on the banks of the Garona River. With a little patience it’s also possible to journey into the Parc Nacional d'Aigüestortes, just east of Alta Ribagorza and loved for its shimmering lakes and opportunities for spotting wildlife.
