Make a villa in Pinarellu your home away from home

It's quite obvious why this residential settlement sprang up: to make sure the residents get first dibs on a prime stretch of shore every morning. Pinarellu apartments and villas are perfectly positioned to access these white sands, voted by the Times as one of Europe's top 20 beaches. That said, the proximity of Sainte-Lucie de Porto-Vecchio to holiday rentals in Punarellu, about two miles away, ensures a beach holiday is perfectly supplemented with supplies for self-catering – or restaurants for those less inclined to do their own cooking. The buzzing nightlife which characterises Porto-Vecchio, about seven miles to the south, is also a selling point, but this is far from a party town. There's an impressive list of ruins to explore, dating back to the Bronze Age, and the citadel and old town are great places to while away a few wondrous hours.

Villas in Pinarellu are a fairly recent development, so there are typically more modern appliances than elsewhere on the island. Most Pinarellu accommodation is equipped with a full kitchen and laundry room, and comes with internet access and satellite TV. Unfortunately, many self catering in Punarellu are not yet equipped to deal with wheelchairs, but a select few are available.

    Things to do

Beaches: Pinarellu Beach is the focus of a holiday here. And it's a good one, with snow-white sands and azure waters, watched over by a medieval Genoese Watchtower, and backed by the shade of pine groves. It does get busy during the summer, but driving the back roads can get guests to more secluded spots further from the main access points.

Nightlife: There are a few restaurants and bars in Pinarellu which are great for a relaxing drink or bite by the sea. However, for a real knees-up, the drive needs to be made into Porto-Vecchio, which has a much more lively scene, and dozens of bars, restaurants and nightclubs to choose from. If guests would like to be closer to the action, HomeAway also offers Porto-Vecchio accommodation.

Outdoor pursuits: Corsica's unique combination of high mountains and coast means there's plenty to do. Hiking, biking and horse trekking are obvious choices for the hundreds of miles of incredibly scenic trails criss-crossing the island. With the coast, there are a host of watersports, with sailing, fishing and scuba diving being particularly popular.

Shopping: Porto-Vecchio has probably the best shopping on the island, and is only a short 12-mile trip from Pinarellu, with regular buses linking the two. Souvenir shops abound, but there are also some great fashion boutiques, and local specialties such as the charcuterie, olive oil, wine and honey to indulge in. Nearby Sainte-Lucie de Porto-Vecchio, where HomeAway also offers a range of holiday homes, should cover guests' grocery needs.

Culture: There's a guided tour around the citadel of Porto-Vecchio, which is now a museum, and the old town is great to explore for the architecture and galleries. The road between Porto-Vecchio and Pinarellu passes an open-air cinema, A Ruscana, which shows recent releases in the evenings during the summer.

    Weather in Pinarellu

Pinarellu boasts perfect beach weather: not too hot in the height of summer, and a long season from April to October. Temperatures rarely top 30°C, and rainfall is negligible during the summer, with most precipitation falling in October and November. Winter high temperatures hardly ever see single digits, and top out in the high-teens.

    Travel to Pinarellu

There are four airports on Corsica, with only two linking directly to the UK: Bastia and Ajaccio, around 83 and 90 miles away respectively. This doesn't seem far, but these are small roads. Better bets are Figari or Solonzara airports, around 28 and 22 miles distant respectively, but these require connecting flights through a mainland Europe hub. Another alternative is to fly to Marseille, hire a car and take the ferry to Porto-Vecchio, which increases flight options dramatically.
