Top five places to visit in Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur

Most visitors to Malaysia will, almost by default, find themselves veering towards the capital city of Kuala Lumpur for accommodation. Malaysian cuisine is universally held in high regard, but there’s no finer place to sample this than the illustrious Golden Triangle. In the shadow of the mighty Petronas Twin Towers, you’ll find the likes of Hakka and Bijan restaurants, as well as the utterly eccentric Berjaya Times Square indoor theme park. The National Museum is an excellent place to learn about the history of the country.

This former capital is significantly less of a spectacular urban mass than its successor, but nonetheless, the royal town is a worthy place to set up camp for your experience. The first thing you’ll see as you enter via the highway is the towering and slightly menacing Kris Monument; upon further exploration, you’ll find more peaceful architectural delights in the form of the Church of Our Lady of St Lourdes. If you can tolerate the smell, keen anglers should not miss the chance to cast their rod in Port Klang.

Just a couple of hours' drive south of Kuala Lumpur and Sepang lies a completely different side of Malaysia. Malacca is the coastal jewel in the country’s crown, an offbeat amalgamation of Asian cultures brimming with heritage. Jonker Street and the famed Night Market are the places to grab yourself some traditional wares – local antiques of paintings of the area, perhaps – before treating yourself to some renowned Almond Orange Cake from the Baboon Café. Be sure to take advantage of the river cruise facilities to view the city from a gentler perspective.

Port Dickson

If you’d prefer to intersperse your visit with an altogether more relaxing pursuit, the beaches of Port Dickson may well be your best option. These are the main attraction of the Negeri Sembilan resort, not least the golden expanses and enchanting waters of the aptly named Ten Mile beach. Younger tourists, though, will enjoy more unconventional enticements like the Ostrich Show Farm. The mini zoo also has a modest but intriguing selection of native animals.

If being horizontal leaves you craving a slice of adrenaline, then Bentong has plenty to offer. This mountainous terrain is a little further from Sepang, but for lovers of the great outdoors, that extra journey is oh-so worth it. You could start off with a comparatively moderate hike up Broga Hill to sample the views, stretching your legs further by ascending the steps towards the breathtaking Batu Caves.
