Things to do

-Nature. In Buzet you’ll have the perfect opportunity to experience the unspoiled beauty of rural Istria. The landscape here is rocky in places, which offers an interesting challenge for hikers. A good route is the Mirna Trail, which starts in Buzet and follows the course of the Mirna River, through a canyon on the way to the town of Hum.

-Cuisine. The local produce around Buzet holiday homes is fantastic. There are vineyards all over, and 13 different winemakers that you can visit if you’d like to sample the chardonnays, sauvignon and muscats. Truffles are also a major source of local pride – in September there’s a festival in the town, in which 10 kilos of truffels go into a big omelette.

-Coast. You could spend a day on the Adriatic by heading east to Umag. The beaches here are typical of Istria in that they’re mostly narrow and unspoiled. Laguna Stella Maris is a Blue Flag-rated gravel beach a short drive north of Umag, offering shallow, clear waters and food kiosks in summer.

-Rijeka. Croatia’s third city is a comfortable drive away too. It’s full of cultural and historical interest, and a specially marked path links all the big sights. Rijeka Cathedral is an imposing circular baroque structure from 1638, while Trsat Castle overlooks the town from a hill, and is founded on the site of a Roman fort.

-Pula. This is another impressive city, and is also an easy drive, this time to the south. The wealth of preserved architecture here is staggering – the Roman Area is the 6th largest in the world, and there’s also a Forum, which still has many elements intact too.
