Things to do

-Beaches. Zlarin offers a number of excellent beaches for families, thanks to the calmness and clarity of its waters. There’s one sandy beach, and a host of smaller pebbly coves around the coastline that remain practically deserted throughout the year, and are ideal for swimming and paddling.

-Boating. Despite the numerous islands and islets close by, Zlarin is one of only a handful of islands in the archipelago that is inhabited. With a yacht or motorboat you’d be able to explore a beautiful and varied portion of the Adriatic, with the stunning Kornati National Park a little way to the west.

-Cycling. As there is no car traffic on Zlarin the best way to get around is by bike. This way you’ll be able to discover the more sparsely inhabited parts if the island, home to dense pine forest and craggy coastline. Elsewhere are olive groves and vineyards, while Klepac, the island’s highest peak, offers lovely views of the surrounding coast.

-Local culture. Zlarin has a centuries-long tradition for coral harvesting, and you can still visit the coral workshop where the coral is crafted into jewellery and decorative items. Meanwhile in August there’s the Bodulska Baladsa, when musicians and entertainers from across Croatia head to the island to take part in a famous folk festival.

-Sibenik. This beautiful city is just a short ferry ride away, and is home to St James’ Cathedral, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, dating to the 15th Century and designed in the renaissance style. There are also four impressive fortresses in Sibenik, dating from the Venetian-Turkish wars, when the city was an important stronghold.
