    Things to do

-Beaches. The Gulf of Roses is a little way east of Ventalló, and has what is considered to be one of the Mediterranean’s most beautiful bays. Golden sandy beaches abound here, at locations like Sant Pere Pescador, which has a six-kilometre beach augmented by activities like wind-surfing, kayaking and beach-sports. The bay continues north towards Roses, or south at Empuries, where there are also Greco-Roman remnants.

-Outdoor recreation. El Fluvià is a river that starts in the Pyrenees and passes by Ventalló just to the north, through an area of considerable natural beauty. You can walk or cycle along the riverbanks here, through scenery made up of orchard and thick woodland, giving way to marshland as you get near the coast. On the way it’s normal to spot otters, heron and sea egrets.

-Food and drink. This area’s position between the mountains and Mediterranean gives it a tantalising cuisine. Restaurants at resorts like Roses specialise in beef with wild mushrooms, grilled fish, fish stews, and rice dishes, while rabbit and chicken are important staples. Crema Catalana is a popular custard dessert comparable to crème brûlée, while the olive oil and wine produced around Ventalló is also of a high standard.

-Figueres. A short drive from Ventalló, this town is associated with the 20th Century surrealist artist, Salvador Dalí, who was born and died here. You can visit the Dalí-Theatre Museum, which was designed by the artist and holds a big collection of his work. The rest of the town is attractive, partially enclosed by medieval walls, with a vibrant Rambla and a number of modernist buildings.

-Girona. To the southwest of Ventalló, Girona preserves many centuries of history, dating back to its foundation by the Romans. There are Arab baths here, many Romanesque churches, and a beautiful Jewish quarter. Within the impressive fortifications of the old town stands the cathedral, which is Romanesque but with a record-breaking gothic nave, the widest of any medieval building. Inside is the Creation Tapestry, an important piece of medieval religious art.

Daily highs at this time range between 25 and 30 degrees, and rainfall is relatively scarce. By the end of the season, temperatures start to taper off, and there’s more precipitation. By December you can expect highs in the mid-teens, and lows that are a few degrees above freezing at night. Winters are also brighter here than in the UK, with twice as many hours of sunshine.

    Travel to Ventalló

The simplest way to approach a Ventalló apartment from Britain is to use Girona-Costa Brava Airport (GRO). It’s northern Catalonia’s main destination, receiving plenty of flights from the UK in the summer. Cars are a necessity for Ventalló, as public transport links are limited, although there is one bus line departing from the airport serving the resorts on the northern Costa Brava. By car you can take the AP-7 autopista from the airport as far as Bàscara, for a journey that should take in the region of half an hour.
