Make a holiday villa in Milazzo your home away from home

Situated on the north coast of Sicily on a seven kilometre-long peninsula is the port and seaside resort of Milazzo.  Although used by many travellers as a jumping off point for the Aeolian Islands which it faces, Milazzo is not without its own charms and attractions.  These include an Arabic-Norman castle and the 17th-century cathedral.  Milazzo is really three towns in one – the ancient walled city at the top of the hill, the medieval part of town below it, and further down, the harbour.

For visitors to this lovely part of Sicily, HomeAway offers a variety of Milazzo holiday villas, large properties with private pools, gardens and sea views.  Those who like style and creature comforts will not be disappointed; they feature beautiful décor and amenities such as internet access, televisions, DVD players, microwaves and washing machines. Alternatively, there are holiday apartments in Milazzo, some close to the beaches and benefitting from stunning outlooks.  If guests make it over to the Aeolian Islands, they may want to return for next year's holiday; thankfully, HomeAway has holiday rentals in a number of locations including Alicudi and Stromboli.

    Things to do

-Historic monuments: The Castle of Milazzo is the main tourist attraction here.  Started by the Arabs and enlarged and strengthened by the Normans it is the largest castle complex in Sicily, extending over seven hectares.  Inside the castle’s walls is the old cathedral that was completed in the first decade of the 17th century.  Another popular historic site is the Sanctuary of San Francesco da Paola and its adjoining monastery, founded in 1465.

-Beaches: From Milazzo holiday villas guests can easily explore the nearby beaches.  There are plenty of long, narrow stretches to sunbathe on, and the crystal-clear waters provide excellent swimming opportunities.  Spiaggia di Ponente with its fine gravel is a popular destination as is the seaside promenade Via Garibaldi for an evening stroll.

-Outdoor activities: Milazzo is only 140 kilometres from Mount Etna, and so day trips to Europe’s tallest volcano are popular with those staying in holiday apartments in Milazzo.  Sea lovers, meanwhile, can charter boats from the harbour or be taken on a boat tour of part of the island’s rugged coastline.  Excursions to the Aeolian Islands can also be booked.

-Food and drink: Milazzo delights in a number of good bars, cafés and restaurants in the old parts of town as well as some along the coast that enjoy good sea views.  Seafood is the speciality here, particularly lobster.  There are also good pizza parlours and traditional, homely trattorias.

    Weather in Milazzo

The resort of Milazzo benefits from a Mediterranean climate.  The summers are hot and dry and the winters are warm, but rainy.  From December to March the weather is mild but it can also be unpredictable.  One day it may be warm and pleasant, but rainy and much cooler the next.

    Travel to Milazzo

Milazzo is served by three airports, and several bus and coach lines connect it to other parts of Sicily including Messina.  Milazzo Train Station serves some of the island’s main railway lines with ongoing links to Italian cities.  There are also good road connections to Messina, Catania and Palermo.
