To the east of Leopoldstadt is the first district known as the Innere Stadt. This is the heart of the city and is surrounded by the Ringstrasse, which follows the path of the old town walls. There are many attractions to be seen in this district which will keep you busy for hours, if not days!

For the first taste of Viennese tradition head to the Basilisk House in Innere Stadt. All Viennese children are told the story of the Basilisk, a half toad-half cockerel which lived in a well in the baker’s house. The story goes that if you looked into the eyes of the Basilisk he would turn you to stone. The Basilisk was beaten by the baker’s apprentice who used a mirror to turn the Basilisk himself into stone.

The first district also houses the Museum Quarter. Here you will find a multitude of interesting Baroque buildings, art museums, exhibition centres and dance studios. Although it has a modern use in today’s world the Museum Quarter maintains the rustic and traditional charm of old Vienna.
