Things to do

de Silves:

The Castelo de Silves offers up great views of the town and countryside. This unique castle with sandstone walls was fully restored in the 1940s. The Moorish well and a rose-coloured water cistern were constructed in the late-12th century. Castelo de Silves was abandoned in the 16th century but is today a popular tourist site.

Museu Municipal de Arqueologia:

Museu Municipal de Arqueologia is a fascinating museum with Roman and Moorish artefacts. The centre of the museum houses an original 14-foot-wide, 60-foot-deep Moorish well, surrounded by a spiral staircase. One wall of the museum is made of glass to showcase a section of the original fort wall.

Sé de Silves:

Next door to the Castelo de Silves is the Cathedral, or Sé, of Silves. Original construction began in the 13th century, but most of that structure was destroyed in an earthquake in the 14th century. Today it is an example of Gothic and Baroque styles.

Wine tasting:

Portugal is quickly gaining a reputation for fine wines, and some of the finest come from the Silves region. The AdegaAdega Cooperativa de Lagoa offers visitors the chance to tour vineyards and sample some of the region's wines.

Torreão da Porta da Cidade:

The Turret of the City Gate is the last of the original four gates to the ancient city that still remains. Dating back to the 12th or 13th century, visitors can enter the tower via an external stairway and enjoy views from the high walkway.

Cruz de Portugal:

The impressive Cross of Portugal is a nine-foot-tall structure made of limestone. It is located en route to the castle, near the eastern end of the riverfront. It was here that the kingdom of Portugal historically had its border. The cross is believed to date back to the late-15th century.
