The coastal city of Tarpon Springs is named after the many tarpon sport fish which can be found just offshore. The city was developed as a winter resort in the 1880s and actually evolved around the natural sponges which are found in the area. The many Greek immigrant sponge divers and their boat crews created a demand for docks and eating places and curious visitors came to Tarpon Springs to buy the sponges. Still known as the “Sponge Capital of the world”, this charming and historic town has around 100 local shops and galleries and plenty of restaurants overlooking the docks and waterfront. It makes an interesting base for a vacation home in Florida, close to the beaches and many attractions.
