Morocco’s third largest city lives up to its name (which translates to ‘Land of God’) by offering visitors a divine combination of lively cultural experiences, historical monuments and natural beauty. It is where visitors who want to have an undiluted feel of life in a modern Arab city will get what they’re looking for. Marrakech’s strategic location makes it the ideal starting point for adventures into the vast Sahara Desert and up the 4km-high peak of the High Atlas Mountain. Those who have fallen victim to Marrakech’s charms can trust HomeAway to provide them with the right kind of holiday rental to suit their needs. Spacious villas are available to those travelling in a large group while there are apartments suited to those couples on a romantic escapade. Most of the Marrakech holiday rentals are immaculately furnished with the right mix of modern practicality and typical Arab flair. Facilities such as swimming pools and air-conditioning are provided to guarantee visitors a comfortable stay.

    Things to do

-Shopping: One of the things that sets Marrakech apart from other locations is the unique shopping experience provided by the markets or ‘souks’ there. In these bustling assemblies holidaymakers can get everything they need in terms of attire as well as supplies for their holiday homes. There are money changers here as well where tourists can change their pounds, dollars or Euros for the local dirhams. A morning of shopping here is a great way of interacting with locals.

-Monuments: There are many interesting historical sites in Marrakech, not least of which are the well-preserved Saadian tombs which date back centuries. The elaborately decorated El Bahia Palace is also worth a visit, if only to briefly step into the shoes of noblemen of the past. In another ancient palace, El Badi, visitors will find a wonderful vantage point from which to survey the city and surrounding areas.

-Museums: To get a further insight into Moroccan history, visitors should pass by the Dar Si Saïd Museum. This former palace contains artefacts that give a glimpse into different stages of Morocco’s past. Collections of works by local artisans are also exhibited here. While visiting the beautiful, tranquil Majorelle Gardens, tourists should also check out the Berber Museum there.

-Cultural experience: Anyone who has toured Marrakech will recommend an evening at the Djemaa El Fna square. This is where visitors can enjoy the frenetic drumbeats of Moroccan music and watch nimble dancers glide to these captivating rhythms. It is also where storytellers and fortune-tellers gather to entertain whoever will listen and where women can get their hands and feet tattooed with beautiful henna artwork. Islam is an integral part of Moroccan culture and in Marrakech tourists will find the largest madrassa in North Africa which also contains lovely works of art.

-Hammam experience: Visitors keen on authentic Moroccan experiences should not leave their Marrakech holiday homes before treating themselves to a hammam. These traditional Moroccan steam baths have been modernised and now offer a range of treatments to rival any spa. This is the best way to relax after ascending into the Atlas Mountains or braving the Sahara.

    Weather in Marrakech

As with most locations in North Africa, visitors should expect hot and dry conditions when they arrive at their holiday rentals in Marrakech, especially given the city’s proximity to the Sahara. Those who choose to book a holiday between June and September should expect nothing less than scorching days with temperatures approaching 40°C. It is therefore a good idea to head to the ‘Red City’ as winter is giving way to spring from around February. Temperatures then are just breaking into the twenties. This locale is not known to experience much rainfall and April, with average measured rainfall of about 35mm, is the wettest month on the Marrakech calendar.

    Travel to Marrakech

The Marrakesh Menara Airport receives passengers on direct flights from London, Madrid, Munich and most other major European cities. Those coming in aboard charter flights from these locations will also be able to land at this airport. Visitors can get a taxi from here to their holiday homes in Marrakech but this will be much more expensive than taking the bus. The bus stop is not hard to find, being just a few metres from the arrivals hall.
