Make a holiday villa in Cortez your home away from home

Located at the southern end of Tampa bay, Cortez holiday villas are pleasantly situated in an historical fishing community, with shrimp, stone crab, grouper and snapper being considered local specialties. Surrounded by water, it's no surprise rentals in Cortez make an ideal base for a beach and watersports holiday, especially when the number of marinas around are factored in. Nearly all Cortez holiday apartments and villas come equipped with air-conditioning, and a washer/dryer to rid clothes of all that sand and salt. Satellite or cable TV is provided in most Cortez rentals, to help guests unwind after a hard day enjoying themselves.

    Things to do

-Beaches: Literally mile upon mile of white-sand beaches are to be had just a short drive to the barrier islands from Cortez holiday accommodation, stretching to the horizon in both directions. Beaches like this are never full, but there are even more secluded spots if tourists are prepared to hire a boat to get to them.

-Watersports: Fishing, obviously, is the number one sport in Cortez, so the opportunities to wet a line are myriad. With the vast Tampa Bay lying to the north, there are also many options for more active pursuits like waterskiing, jet skiing and parasailing.

-Golf: With seven golf courses within a five-mile drive, visitors could feasibly fish in the morning and golf in the afternoon, or vice versa. There are also several crazy and adventure golf attractions to keep the kids amused if they don't take the game as seriously as their parents!

-Nightlife: Seafood restaurants are the backbone of Cortez's culinary résumé, and there's nothing better than fresh food, from sea to plate, in a matter of hours. Bars are somewhat scarce in Cortez proper, but just across the bridge are a number of beachfront hangouts if visitors enjoy the laid-back vibe. Alternately, head inland for more mainstream establishments.

-Everglades: For nature watching, hiking, camping, kayaking, canoeing, boating and biking, they don't come much better than the Florida Everglades. With seven distinct ecosystems to explore, there's a new experience around every corner, at just a short jaunt inland.

    Weather in Cortez

St Petersburg, just across the bay from Cortez, is deservedly known as 'The Sunshine City' for its average of 361 days of sun every year. Modest Cortez shares this weather if not the moniker, which makes it a perfect year-round destination. Summers tend to be long and hot, with sometimes significant humidity breaking into afternoon and evening thunderstorms, and maximum temperatures typically in the mid-30s. Winters approximate British summers, with little rain and mild temperatures in the low-20s.

    Travel to Cortez

The nearest international airport to Cortez with direct flights to Europe is Tampa International Airport, at 53 miles away. Fly/drive is really the only option in America, as public transport is often ignored and thereby usually quite poor. Tampa Bay does have a public bus service, but the weather, particularly in the summer, can make this an unpleasant hot and sweaty experience. Southwest Florida International Airport is another flight option at 107 miles away in Fort Myers, but guests will have to change as this is a North American hub only.
