    Things to do

-Modernism. A few blocks along Carrer d’Aragó from Clot Metro station is a Barcelona icon, the Sagrada Família, a gigantic basilica designed by modernist architect Antoni Gaudí. It’s just one part of an art nouveau UNESCO site that spans Barcelona and comprises other masterpieces including Parc Güell in Gràcia and the crazily ornate Casa Batlló apartment block in Eixample.

-Miró. Barcelona is associated with other artistic innovators from the 20th Century. Joan Miró was distinctively Catalan, spending many of his most productive years in exile during the Franco regime. The Fundació Miró at Montjuïc is perhaps Barcelona’s best art museum, containing hundreds of this artist’s paintings and sculptures. There are also public works around Barcelona by Miró, including a mosaic on Las Ramblas and a 20-metre-high sculpture in Miró’s eponymous park.

-Beach. In summer you can take it easy at one of Barcelona’s numerous city beaches. There’s a promenade that connects a range of individual beaches, which are all enhanced by the fantastic range of shops and restaurants that overlook them. La Nova Mar Bella is right next to the Olympic Village and is half a kilometre in length, with lifeguards, showers, soft golden sand and gentle waves.

-Shopping. You’ll be spoiled for choice in Barcelona, and in El Clot one of the city’s favourite shopping centres is within walking distance. The mall at Glòries offers several levels, with international brands, restaurants and even a cinema. Hop on the Metro for Gràcia, with its bijou boutiques and cafe culture, sashay along the Passeig de Gràcia in Eixample, where the luxury flagships are located, or sample alternative lifestyles in El Raval, home to second-hand bookshops and niche fashion.

-Dining. If you’d like to enjoy the best of Catalan cuisine you have a choice between the casual, innovative and traditional, and sometimes a combination of all three. A new generation of regional chefs has helped Barcelona gain Michelin stars all over the place – you could try Enoteca, Saüc, Moments and Cinc Sentits. Pintxos meanwhile is a dining style growing in popularity; it’s the Basque take on tapas.
