    Things to do

Bassacutena is a small village in the Gallura region of northern Sardinia, in the heart of farming country. Tuscan woodcutters used to frequent the area and may have given it its name. The town itself developed in the 19th century when the road between Tempio Pausania and Palau was built. Giuseppe Garibaldi pushed through a change in the route the road was to take so that it would pass through the property of a friend who owned a sheep pen here.

They will take you through farmland and groves of oak and olive trees or you may opt to go down to the nearby Liscia River and explore its banks.

-Lago del Liscia is an artificial lake about 4 miles south of Bassacutena upstream on the Liscia River. Here you can swim, row, fish or just take in the peaceful surroundings. Along the shores there are magnificent granite structures eroded by time and you’ll also find olive groves that have been here for a millennium. There is also a spa nearby if you need some pampering.

Here you can participate in a variety of water sports, from swimming and sailing to snorkelling and diving.

From Palau, take the ferry to the La Maddalena and visit the island where Garibaldi spent his final years and was buried. The islands of the archipelago also offer great hiking and water sports.

-Arzachena, to the south-east, is the place to go to if you want to stock up on provisions for your movie-style lunch at your Bassacutena holiday villa. The market there not only offers a variety of fresh produce but also typical Sardinian cheeses and other delicacies. Arzachena is also home to some of Sardinia’s most impressive Nuragic sites, including the nuraghe of Albucciu, the Giants’ Tombs of Coddu Vecchju and Li Lolghi and the temple of Malchittu.
