    Things to do

-Forcalquier. The town is built around on steep hillsides and is packed with interesting little sights. On Place Saint-Michel you’ll find a Renaissance fountain from the 16th Century. At the top of the hill is the site of a former citadel, long since replaced by a pretty chapel with far-reaching views. At the Municipal Museum you can see artefacts from the Gallo-Roman era, and if you come to town on a Monday you’ll catch the market at Place du Bourguet.

-Natural scenery. North of Forcalquier, on the way to Fontienne, is a strange landscape of rocks that have been thinned at the base by erosion, giving them the appearance of giant mushrooms. These are known as Les Mourres, and some reach heights of 25 metres. Another fascinating quirk of the local countryside are bories – small and historic stone huts built as shelters for farmers.

-Outdoor recreation. Activities available in Forcalquier’s surroundings include bike riding, hikes and horseback riding. There are four equestrian centres and more than 40 kilometres of bridle paths locally. The town connects with four long-distance GR hiking trails, but there are also 50 marked trails for short hikes and 470 kilometres of paths for family strolls. The terrain here is rugged hills, wheat fields, olive groves and large swathes of lavender.

-Food and drink. The herbs cultivated in the countryside here are put to all kinds of uses – there’s a distillery in Forcalquier producing a range of appetizers and aperitifs. A fantastic goat cheese is also made nearby - Banon is a soft cheese, wrapped in brown chestnut leaves and tied with a raffia ribbon. Many of the olive groves in the area produce oil that was protected with AOC status in 2007.

-Sisteron. One of the remarkable things about this town is its setting, on the banks of the Durance River and with a precipitous and jagged mountainside in the background. On this craggy slope sits a fantastic piece of military heritage, fortified by Vauban in the 17th Century; The Citadel, commanding wonderful views, is defended by historic ramparts and contains a chapel. Further down, on the streets of Sisteron is the Cathedral of Notre-Dame from the 1100s.
