    Things to do

-Seville sights. The cathedral is an impressive landmark, and possibly the largest church in the world. It's built on the site of Seville's Islamic-era mosque, and this is especially evident in the La Giralda, a beautiful minaret, which was converted into a bell-tower in the 14th Century. Another stunning example of Seville's medieval heritage can be seen at the Real Alcazar, a sprawling palace in the Moorish style, also built during the 14th Century.

-Seville culture. Regarded as one of Spain's premier art museums, the Museo de Bellas Artes is free to enter if you're an EU citizen. In the vast collection here are works by important Spanish artists like El Greco, Goya and Murillo, with a focus on the Golden Age of Sevillian art, in the 1600s. Other museums of note include an attraction devoted to Flamenco dance, and an archaeology museum displaying artefacts from the ancient city of Italica.

-Natural scenery. Running in a long, vertical line, just west of Sanlucar la Mayor is the Corredor Verde de Guadiamar. It's a narrow expanse of protected scenery on the banks of the Guadiamar River. The river creates a band of greenery that is at odds with the surrounding arid landscape. On a bike ride in this park you'll see meadowland, forests, rice fields and marshes that are home to exceptionally diverse birdlife.

-Food and drink. Seville is well known for two Spanish classics - tapas and gazpacho. The latter is a cool tomato soup with pepper, garlic and other vegetables. Tapas is an institution here, and in Seville you'll find a high concentration of excellent bars around the cathedral. Among the many tapas specialities are garlic prawns, cured ham, olives, cheese from La Mancha, potato omelette and Galician-style octopus.

-Coast. Just next to the Donana National Park is Mazagon, a municipality on the Costa de la Luz, known for its long sandy beaches. The town's main beach has an urban feel, with services that include lifeguard patrol, sunbed and parasol hire, parking and showers. Neighbouring Playa de las Dunas is more remote and fringed by dunes, but it's still easy to get to the shops that line the beachfront at Mazagon.
