Overview

About the property

Secluded farmhouse with character

Traditional stone farmhouse, over 200 years old, restored with loving care, set in a secluded private garden with its own private pool and shady veranda, the only distraction an occasional passing tractor.

Located in a quiet hamlet, this personable and friendly house is a warm place to spend your holiday. It is furnished with a mixture of traditional farmhouse and modern furniture. It is self-catering and sleeps 4 (1 double room, 1 room with twin beds).

From the shuttered bathroom you can walk out under the vine straight into the garden. At night, you can see the Milky Way and spot falling stars (ideally accompanied by a glass of cognac). The local shops and market are a 10 minute drive away and the local region is busy with food markets, restaurants and festivals.

Peaceful holiday location: The house is a perfect place to get away from it all. You can easily spend a week in the garden and the pool, popping out only for the odd meal at one of the great local restaurants. However, if you want a base from which to explore the area, with its châteaux, markets and amazing landscape, then this house is also perfectly suited to your needs.

About Zoe Gray

I'm a curator working in an art museum in Brussels. Although I grew up in the UK, every summer was spent in this holiday house, with very fond memories. Now a mother myself, I enjoy reliving those childhood memories with my son.

Zoe Gray purchased this cottage in 1978

Why Zoe Gray chose Saint-Sulpice-de-Roumagnac

The house is warm and friendly, incredibly calm and peaceful, the perfect retreat from our busy lives.

What makes this cottage unique

Private pool, secluded garden, shady terrace, thick stone walls, wooden floors... the perfect haven.

Notes:
As the house is also my home for several periods of the year, it contains a number of personal items, books, pictures, etc.. This gives the place a more lived-in atmosphere, whilst leaving space for you to make it your own for your holiday. The place is filled with history and character and has certain quirks (light switches placed in odd corners, for example) but also has a warmth to it often lacking in rental properties.

Rustic gem!

  • 5 of 5

This home is amazing! A simply stunning rustic gem! From the moment you pull into the drive you know you have booked a fabulous place. The property is an old style cottage, with lovely log burners, shutters and low beams. I can't sing the praises of this property enough! Being able to hop in the pool all day if you want or walking round the sunflower fields was great. The kids love the pool and spent hours in it. You have to have a car as the nearest town to get food from is 6 miles away. Ribérac has a lovely market on every Friday and would recommend going here. We had day trips out to the alligator park, some beautiful caves and small towns.

Our children are 8 and 9 years old, and I needed to watch has them up and down the stairs a few times when we first arrived as they are very steep and not wide. The beams upstairs are very low! You really need to bend right down to get under them! But the kids loved this, said it was like being in a den.

The property has everything you need. Small kitchen, with all the pots, pans etc that you need. Hair dryer, washing machine, towels bedding, board games, the works! And all finished with the homely touch of photos and books. We will 100% be booking this property again!! ♡

Beautiful rustic farmhouse

  • 5 of 5

We've stayed here a number of times now, and would highly recommend it to others. The house and garden are beautiful, and everything is well kept and clean. The description of the property is accurate. We really enjoyed the peacefulness of the setting and the rustic charm of the farmhouse; the pool was a big bonus.

There is plenty to do nearby: the weekly market in Riberac is well worth a visit, as are the numerous local cafes and restaurants. There are also plenty of options for the more actively inclined: the Grand Etang de la Jemaye is a twenty minute drive away, and is a beautiful lake set in woodland with a beach, swimming area, restaurant and canoes for hire. We also hired kayaks at St Astier (30 mins from St Sulpice), for a day trip down the river.

This is a great spot for a relaxing holiday. You will need a car (or at least bicycles) to access shops and surrounding areas of interest.

Excellent place for a relaxing holiday!

  • 5 of 5

We would highly recommend this charming cottage, where we have now spent a number of holidays. It is easy to reach, either by train to Angouleme or plane to Bergerac. The house is clean, well maintained and everything is easy to find. The private pool is a great bonus, especially during the heatwave we enjoyed this summer. The market in Riberac is close enough to reach even on the laziest of mornings. There are plenty of pretty towns nearby to explore and the house is not far from the famous caves of Lascaux. It provides a great getaway from busy London life and is exactly what we look for in a holiday.

Lovely cottage!

  • 5 of 5

This cottage is a great place to have a relaxing holiday or get out and see some of the beautiful surrounding countryside and villages. The description is really accurate and the cottage was lovely and clean, with a welcoming and homely feel, and bigger than we thought it would be! The owners provided a quick and friendly service and were available to help if we had any problems (there weren't any). Having the pool was great when it got hot in the day. There are some well signposted walks nearby, one right next to the cottage, and you can hire canoes and bikes in Riberac which isn't far away. Would definitely recommend!

The cottage nestles in a sleepy hamlet close to the market town of Riberac (a 10-minute drive away). Throughout the summer, the town stages many concerts in its churches and main square, from jazz or classical to more traditional French chanson. There are also many village fêtes, usually with fantastic firework displays.

The Perigord region is famed for its fine foods and beautiful rolling countryside. The area is dominated by farms and woodland, interspersed with bustling market towns and quiet villages. Romanesque churches dot the landscape and several picturesque towns – such as Brantome and Perigueux – are a 30 minute drive away. To the east, you will find the vineyards of St. Emilion and Pomerol, and Bordeaux itself makes for a pleasant day trip.

Other Activities: Eating, drinking and playing boules are the local pastimes...
