Just 25 kilometres from Xonrupt-Longemer is the Murbach Abbey, which was founded in 727 BC and is well worth a visit. A similar distance away is the lovely town of Kaysersberg, which is renowned for its painted half timber buildings. Many of the buildings here are historic treasures such as the 13th-15th century Church Sainte-Croix, the 15th century towers, bridge and ramparts and the ruins of the Chateau de Kaysersberg.
The warmest time of the year in this part of the country is normally July and August and the coldest December to February. Average high temperatures here are about 22 degrees centigrade in July and August. In January the average high is five degrees centigrade, but temperatures can fall below zero in winter. Rainfall is moderate in the summer with June and July averaging about eight hours of sunshine per day.
