Holidaymakers looking for a fascinating historic town in the southern half of the United States might like to visit Wickenburg. Located in Arizona this is a great place to visit with many interesting things to do and see. There are numerous different places to stay including self catering accommodation, B&Bs and campsites.
Wickenburg has some good hiking trails with wonderful scenic views, although hikers should be wary of the heat during the summer. This is also a popular area for cycling and horseback riding. Wickenburg has several galleries featuring the work of local artists as well as museums such as the Desert Caballeros Western Museum and Maricopa County Historical Society. Tourists can learn more about the gold rush by visiting Vulture Mine and Vulture City Ghost Town. There are some great areas of natural beauty well worth visiting such as Hassayampa River Preserve and Hummingbird Springs Wilderness. There are other historical tours available taking in downtown Wickenburg or the 200 year old Jail Tree that once served as the town’s prison. A 60 mile drive takes holidaymakers to the state capital Phoenix, where there are many more fascinating places to visit such as museums, galleries and theatres.
It can get very hot in Arizona during the summer with average highs of 40 degrees centigrade in July and August, while temperatures between May and October see average highs of over 30 degrees centigrade. The average highs in December and January are 19 degrees, but can fall as low as 5 degrees centigrade. This is a very dry area with average rainfall less than eight inches. Rainfall is fairly evenly distributed throughout the year although April to June sees the smallest amount of wet weather.
Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) is approximately 70 miles from Wickenburg. Flights arrive here from numerous U.S and some international cities including Chicago, Dallas, London, Los Angeles, Mexico City, New York, Toronto and Washington. Taxis can be hired from outside the terminal buildings whilst Advantage, Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Fox, Hertz, National, Payless and Thrifty are car rental firms located at the airport.
