The very word "Waikiki" conjures up the image of exotic tropical beaches, surfing and a relaxed lifestyle in this tropical paradise. Waikiki was once the playground of Hawaiian royalty and is now the epicentre of tourism on Hawaii, with many luxury hotels overlooking the gorgeous sandy beach.
Waikiki is best known for its gorgeous sands and surfing beach. Snorkeling, sailing, parasailing, windsurfing, jet skiing and other water sports can all be enjoyed. Take lessons with a pro surfer, book a scuba diving trip or go sport fishing – an exhilarating way to spend a day. Visitors can rent cycles and take the 5-mile bicycle tour which runs downhill through the Puu Ohia Rainforest. Hikers can explore dormant volcanoes, discover lava beds and see steam vents and craters. Helicopter tours are a popular way to see the high mountain peaks covered in lush rainforest.
Pearl Harbor is a must-do for visitors from their Waikiki holiday rental. The attraction includes a tour of the USS Arizona Memorial to the lives lost in 1941 when the U.S. Pacific Fleet was bombed. There is also the Punchbowl National Cemetery and an informative Visitor Centre. The Iolani Palace is well worth a visit as it is the only royal palace standing on American soil. Diamond Head State National Monument is a local landmark in Waikiki with a huge volcanic crater. From the summit, humpback whales can be seen in the clear waters offshore.
Visitors staying at Waikiki holiday rentals will find the weather is constantly warm and sunny whatever the season, which is why it makes such a great vacation destination. Temperatures average between 26-31°C (79-88°F) year-round. The summer months are relatively dry with the odd shower. Oahu has more rain showers from November to April, however the total rainfall is only 28 inches per year.
The nearest airport to Waikiki is Honolulu International (HNL) Airport which is just 8 miles away. It is served by many international airlines from the USA, Canada and Australia as well as domestic flights from other Hawaiian islands. Getting from the airport to your Waikiki holiday apartment or villa rental is very easy. The airport has a shuttle coach service known as the Waikiki Express that serves the area. It is reasonably priced but it can be slow. If you are travelling as a group, a taxi to your apartment may be faster and less hassle. City buses also run to the airport from downtown. Once you have settled in, Waikiki is easy to walk around so a hire car is not essential.
